Why I Carry a Gun
My old grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'.

You don't have to have a weapon, but when you try to take mine........We have a serious problem.

Hey, I'll bite. A gun thread is a great way to pump up site traffic.
First off, it's pretty clear that the Founding Fathers of this Great Nation intended the second amendment as an anti-government measure. The idea was, if our elected representatives ever went off the reservation, then stout-hearted citizens would bring them back by force of arms. This is pretty funny on a number of levels, but let's just think back how many freedom loving Americans protested against the warrentless wire-tapping, suspension of habeus corpus, SWAT teams killing grannies in their own homes, etc. etc. etc. etc. that the past 6-7 years have brought us. Damn few.
Second, although the "Armed Citizen" stories in "American Rifleman" are stirring stuff, guns are comparatively rarely used to defend against crime. Instead, the gun amplifies the crime; e.g. an argument becomes a homicide. Consider too, that owning a gun hugely increases the chance that you or your loved ones will be shot; the bad guy grabs your gun before you shoot him, a matrimonial dispute becomes deadly, or your child mistakes the gun for a plaything. All bad shit, and given that violent crime in the USA is at or near historic low levels you have to ask is it worth the risk.
On the other hand, I think folks who want to ban guns should just get over it. Every year there's something like 30,000 fatalities from gunshot in the USA. Every year, something like 40,000 people die on the roads, and nobody talks about banning cars (I'm too lazy to google actual numbers, so my statistics are probably off).
